VARIABLE AUTO TRANSFORMER
A Variac, also known as a variable autotransformer, is a continuously adjustable voltage transformer with a single-layer winding placed on a toroidal core made of high-grade steel.
In an autotransformer, different portions of the same winding function as both the primary and secondary windings. The winding includes multiple taps where electrical connections are made. One end of the winding is typically common to both the input power source and the output load. The other ends of the source and load are connected to various taps along the winding, allowing different output voltages to be obtained. Each tap corresponds to a specific voltage level measured from the common end.
Along the outer surface of the copper winding, a specially treated, durable contact track is provided. A specially designed carbon brush moves smoothly over this surface. The brush is mounted on a contact arm connected to a central shaft. When the control knob is rotated, the carbon brush slides across the winding, selecting different points and thereby adjusting the output voltage.
A standard autotransformer is designed to operate on a nominal input of 240V AC and can provide a continuously variable output voltage ranging from 0 to 240V, and in some models up to 290V, through simple transformer action.
