Why Your Plant or Facility Needs a Step Down Transformer

High voltage from the grid is not directly usable by most machines. It has to come down first. The wrong voltage level is the most avoidable cause of machine damage in Indian industry.

Imported Machinery Needs a Different Voltage

Machines from Germany, USA, France, or Japan are built for 220V, 110V, or 200V supply, not Indian 415V or 440V. Running them on the wrong voltage causes overheating, motor burnout, and controller damage. A step down transformer prevents all of this.

Grid Supply Is Too High for Many Loads

Most electrical equipment is rated at 230V or 240V single phase, or 200V to 240V three phase. Indian utility supply often comes in at 415V three phase. Step down transformers bridge this gap accurately at every load level.

Factory Sub-Distribution Requires Voltage Steps

Large factories receive 11kV or 33kV from the utility and step it down to 415V at the main intake. Individual sections of the plant then step it further to 240V or 200V. Step down transformers handle both levels of this distribution chain.

Equipment Damage Is Far Costlier Than Prevention

A burnt out servo drive, a failed control panel, or a damaged CNC controller costs far more than the transformer that would have kept the voltage correct. Step down transformers are a one-time investment against repeated repair bills.

How a Step Down Transformer Works

A step down transformer reduces AC voltage from a higher primary level to a lower secondary level using electromagnetic induction. The secondary coil has fewer turns than the primary, which gives a proportionally lower output voltage.

High Voltage Enters the Primary

The higher voltage AC supply connects to the primary winding. The number of turns on the primary determines the primary voltage rating.

Magnetic Field Is Created

Current in the primary winding creates a changing magnetic field in the CRGO silicon steel core. This field links both primary and secondary windings.

Lower Voltage Induced in Secondary

The secondary winding has fewer turns. Fewer turns means a lower induced voltage. The ratio of turns directly gives the ratio of voltages.

Correct Voltage Delivered to Load

The secondary delivers the stepped-down voltage to your machine or equipment. As voltage decreases, current increases proportionally, keeping power roughly constant.

Which Cooling Type Is Right for Your Application?

Both types deliver the same accurate voltage step down. The difference is in operating environment, KVA capacity, and service life under load.

Air Cooled — Best For
  • Indoor, moderate temperature environments
  • Small to medium KVA (up to 200 KVA typically)
  • Offices, server rooms, hospitals, schools
  • CNC machines, PLCs, packaging equipment
  • Clean industrial environments
  • Lower upfront cost
Oil Cooled — Best For
  • Outdoor and harsh environment installations
  • High ambient temperature (Africa, Middle East)
  • Large KVA ratings and continuous 24/7 duty
  • Cement plants, steel mills, textile factories
  • Export orders requiring outdoor enclosures
  • Longer service life in tough conditions

Winding Configurations for Step Down Transformers

The right winding configuration depends on your supply arrangement, load type, and whether you need a neutral output. Here is what each means in plain language.

Star / Delta (Y/Δ)

Primary in star, secondary in delta. Star primary allows grounding of the neutral, which adds safety on the high voltage input side. Common in utility substations stepping down 11kV or 33kV to 415V.

Delta / Star (Δ/Y)

Primary in delta, secondary in star. Star secondary provides a neutral output, useful when connected equipment needs a neutral reference. Widely used in commercial buildings and industrial distribution.

Star / Star (Y/Y)

Both sides in star. Neutral on both input and output. Good for sensitive loads that need a very stable neutral reference on both sides of the transformer.

Delta / Delta (Δ/Δ)

Both sides in delta. No neutral on either side. Very rugged, used for heavy industrial motor loads. Can continue partial operation if one winding develops a fault. Preferred in steel plants and foundries.

Where Are Step Down Transformers Used?

Anywhere the available supply voltage is higher than what the connected machines or equipment require. These are the most common industries we supply.

1
PhaseSingle phase for individual equipment. Three phase for industrial machines and whole-facility distribution.
2
Input VoltageYour incoming supply. Check the actual measured value at your site. Grid voltage in India varies by location and time of day.
3
Output VoltageThe voltage rating on the machine nameplate is what the transformer secondary must deliver.
4
KVA RatingTotal rated load plus 20 to 25 percent headroom. Share the load list with us and we will confirm the right KVA.
5
Cooling and EnclosureAir cooled for indoor and smaller KVA. Oil cooled for large KVA or outdoor or high-temperature locations. IP56 for outdoor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a step down transformer and a step down isolation transformer?
A standard step down transformer reduces voltage but shares a ground between input and output. A step down isolation transformer reduces voltage and also completely isolates the input from the output electrically. No conductive path. You get noise suppression, shock protection, and ground loop elimination along with the voltage reduction.
Which winding configuration is better, Star/Delta or Delta/Star?
It depends on your application. Star/Delta is commonly used in utility substations stepping down from 11kV or 33kV because the star primary can be solidly grounded for safety. Delta/Star is used in industrial and commercial distribution where a neutral output is needed. Our team will specify the right one for your situation.
What is the most common three phase step down transformer in India?
415V to 240V three phase is the most common for industrial use, matching standard Indian supply to lower voltage machine requirements. For factory intake from the utility grid, 11kV to 415V is the standard distribution configuration.
Can you supply step down transformers for Japanese equipment?
Yes, regularly. Japanese machinery typically runs on 200V. We manufacture 415V to 200V and 440V to 200V three phase step down transformers specifically for this. Any voltage ratio is available.
What KVA ratings do you make?
Popular sizes are 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 300, 400, 500, 750, and 1000 KVA. Custom ratings are available outside this range.
What is the warranty on your step down transformers?
Minimum 2 years. Our transformers are built for continuous industrial operation and the maintenance requirement is low. If something goes wrong in the warranty period, we fix it.
