Need Help Selecting a Rectifier?

Whether you need low-voltage, high-current DC power for a plating bath or an adjustable rectifier for a process line, Purevolt India can evaluate your operating requirements and recommend a suitable configuration.

What Is an Industrial Rectifier?

An industrial rectifier is electrical power-conversion equipment that changes alternating current, or AC, into direct current, or DC.

Most utility and factory supplies are available as AC. However, processes such as electroplating, anodising, electrolysis and industrial battery charging require current to flow continuously in one direction. A rectifier provides this unidirectional DC output.

Unlike a small electronic power supply, an industrial rectifier may need to deliver hundreds or thousands of amperes continuously. Its design must therefore account for semiconductor capacity, transformer rating, output conductors, heat dissipation, current measurement, control accuracy and operating duty.

A rectifier must not be confused with an inverter. A rectifier converts AC into DC, while an inverter converts DC into AC.

How Does a Rectifier Convert AC into DC?

An AC waveform changes direction repeatedly. A rectifying circuit uses semiconductor devices that permit or control current flow in a selected direction.

In a basic diode rectifier, silicon diodes conduct during the appropriate portion of the AC waveform and block current in the reverse direction. A full-wave rectifier uses both halves of the incoming AC waveform to produce pulsating DC.

Industrial systems may use transformers before the rectifying stage to obtain the required voltage and provide an appropriate current capacity. Filters or smoothing components may then be incorporated where the process requires reduced ripple.

In a controlled rectifier, silicon-controlled rectifiers, or SCRs, regulate when conduction begins during each AC cycle. This enables adjustment of the DC output instead of providing only a fixed rectified voltage. The required circuit, filtering and control arrangement depends on the process โ€” output ripple, regulation, current density and control response should be confirmed before manufacturing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an industrial rectifier?
An industrial rectifier is electrical power-conversion equipment that changes alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC), designed to deliver hundreds or thousands of amperes continuously for processes such as electroplating, anodising, and battery charging.
What is the difference between a rectifier and an inverter?
A rectifier converts AC into DC, while an inverter converts DC into AC. They perform opposite power-conversion functions.
What is the difference between a silicon rectifier and an SCR rectifier?
A basic silicon diode rectifier conducts during the appropriate portion of the AC waveform to produce a fixed rectified DC output. An SCR-controlled rectifier uses silicon-controlled rectifiers to regulate when conduction begins during each AC cycle, allowing the DC output to be adjusted rather than fixed.
Where are Purevolt rectifiers used?
Purevolt rectifiers are used in electroplating plants, zinc/nickel/copper/chromium plating, aluminium anodising, metal-finishing units, electrochemical processes, industrial battery charging, chemical processing equipment, laboratory process lines, OEM machinery, and R&D installations.
How do I choose the right rectifier configuration?
Selection depends on process voltage, required current, operating duty, output ripple, regulation, current density, and control response. Send your process and electrical data to Purevolt India for a technical evaluation and suitable configuration.
