Phase: Single Phase
Input: 230 V AC
Output: 230 V AC

The Purevolt 5 KVA isolation transformer is designed for single-phase equipment groups and medium-capacity electrical or electronic loads that require galvanic isolation from the mains supply. The standard listed configuration has a nominal 230 V AC input and 230 V AC output, allowing it to provide a 1:1 isolated supply for industrial controls, laboratories, medical support equipment, IT systems, communication installations, test facilities, and commercial electronics.

The primary and secondary windings are electrically separate. Power is transferred through the magnetic core, removing the direct conductive connection between source and load. In a properly installed system, this arrangement can improve electrical separation and help reduce common-mode noise reaching sensitive equipment.

Typical Applications

A 5 KVA isolation transformer can serve one medium-sized system or several smaller devices connected to a common isolated output. Suitable applications may include:

  • Small industrial control and automation systems
  • CNC, PLC, HMI, and instrumentation circuits
  • Medical and diagnostic-support electronics
  • Laboratory analysers and scientific instruments
  • IT racks, servers and network equipment
  • Telecom and communication systems
  • Printing and packaging-machine controls
  • Audio-video, studio and broadcasting equipment
  • Test benches and calibration facilities
  • Office systems with multiple connected devices
  • Security and surveillance infrastructure
  • Research and educational laboratories

The final application should be approved after checking the total VA, running current, startup or inrush demand, power factor, harmonics, operating duty, and ambient conditions.

Benefits of a 5 KVA Isolated Supply

Sensitive loads may be affected by interference conducted through shared power and grounding paths. An isolation transformer creates a separate secondary circuit and can attenuate certain common-mode disturbances. This is valuable for measurement, automation, communication, computing, and audio systems where unwanted electrical references can affect performance.

Galvanic isolation can also support servicing and test applications where an isolated source is required. However, safe working procedures, protective devices, and correct secondary earthing are still necessary. Isolation reduces a particular type of electrical connection; it does not remove every shock, fault, surge, or equipment risk.

Isolation, Regulation and Backup Are Different

A 5 KVA isolation transformer is not automatically a voltage stabilizer. With a nominal 1:1 ratio, the secondary voltage generally changes when the primary voltage changes. If the incoming supply is consistently low, high, or unstable, a servo stabilizer or automatic voltage regulator may also be required.

The transformer also does not provide stored-energy backup. An online UPS is needed where equipment must continue operating during outages. Surge-protection devices, circuit breakers, residual-current protection, EMI filters, and earthing each serve separate functions and should be coordinated according to the application.

Calculating the Required Rating

At 230 V, a 5 KVA transformer corresponds to approximately 21.7 A at unity power factor. This value should not be treated as the only selection criterion. The connected load may draw nonlinear current, have a low power factor, or produce substantial startup inrush. Transformer losses, temperature, ventilation, duty cycle, and future expansion must also be considered.

Prepare a load list showing equipment quantity, input voltage, watts or VA, rated current, power factor, and startup demand. Add loads that operate simultaneously and include an engineering margin. Where load characteristics are unknown, obtain the equipment manufacturer’s input data rather than relying on estimates.

Installation and Maintenance

Place the transformer in a dry, clean, ventilated location with sufficient access for inspection. Use appropriately rated cables, lugs, isolators, breakers and earthing conductors. Protect the enclosure from rain, flooding, corrosive chemicals, conductive dust, blocked airflow, and mechanical impact.

A qualified electrician should commission the unit and verify input-output voltage, insulation, terminal tightness, earth continuity, load current, voltage drop, sound, and temperature. Routine maintenance should include cleaning, ventilation checks, terminal inspection, and investigation of abnormal heat, smell, humming, or repeated tripping.
