Ferroresonant Transformer
Purevolt India manufactures ferroresonant transformers for applications requiring regulated voltage, electrical isolation, and passive power conditioning. Also called ferroresonant voltage regulators, these units use controlled magnetic saturation and a capacitor-based resonant circuit to reduce the effect of voltage fluctuations, electrical noise, transients, and short-duration supply disturbances. Manufacturing in New Delhi since 1995.

What Is a Ferroresonant Transformer?
A ferroresonant transformer is a specially designed transformer that combines magnetic-core saturation with an inductive-capacitive resonant circuit. This arrangement enables the transformer to maintain a comparatively stable output when the incoming voltage changes within its designed operating range.
The term “ferroresonant” refers to resonance involving a ferromagnetic core operating in its nonlinear or saturated region. This differs from an ordinary isolation or distribution transformer, whose core is normally designed to remain below saturation during standard operation.
A ferroresonant design can combine several power-conditioning functions in one magnetic device: voltage regulation, galvanic isolation, current limiting, surge and transient attenuation, electrical-noise reduction, and millisecond-scale energy support. The precise performance depends on transformer design, supply frequency, loading, power factor, waveform, and the electrical characteristics of the connected equipment.

Ferroresonant Operating Principle
A ferroresonant transformer divides magnetic operation into input and regulated-output sections, commonly using magnetic shunts or controlled leakage paths. The input winding receives the AC supply, while a secondary or tertiary winding works with a capacitor to establish resonance.
The design intentionally drives part of the magnetic core into saturation. Once this section enters the designed saturated operating region, substantial changes in magnetizing current produce comparatively smaller changes in magnetic flux. Because the output voltage is related to the flux linked with the output winding, the saturated region helps limit output-voltage variation.
The regulating action is therefore intrinsic to the magnetic circuit rather than being commanded by a separate control board.
