WHAT IS CONSTANT VOLTAGE TRANSFORMER OR CVT ?

Galvanic Isolation for Enhanced Protection
In a Constant Voltage Transformer, the primary (input) winding and the secondary (output) winding are physically separated. This separation is known as galvanic isolation, which ensures there is no direct electrical connection between the input supply and the output load. The CVT acts as an effective barrier against electrical spikes, surges, and high-frequency noise. This barrier also works in reverse, preventing a noisy load from feeding interference back into the mains supply.
Perfect Sine Wave Output
A CVT has the unique ability to convert any input waveform—including a square wave—into a clean and stable sine wave output.
At Purevolt, we conducted extensive testing at our factory using an oscilloscope. The results clearly showed that even when a square wave input was applied, the Constant Voltage Transformer converted it into a pure sine wave output. This demonstrates the superior conditioning capability of our CVTs.
You can clearly observe the input square wave containing heavy harmonic content and multiple voltage spikes. However, the output delivered by the Purevolt Constant Voltage Transformer (CVT) is exceptional. The resonant circuit of the CVT regenerates the waveform, absorbing all input disturbances and delivering a perfect sine wave output.
In our ferroresonant type Constant Voltage Transformers (CVTs), the AC mains supply energizes the input winding, which is physically and electrically isolated from the output winding. The input winding operates at moderate flux levels, while the output winding exhibits an intrinsic energy storage characteristic. This stored energy works in conjunction with a mains capacitor to generate a self-sustaining AC magnetic flux field, which is indirectly coupled from the input winding.
These Constant Voltage Transformers utilize a tank circuit consisting of a high-voltage resonant winding and a capacitor to produce a nearly constant average output voltage, even when the input voltage varies significantly. The ferroresonant design is highly reliable because it contains no active electronic components and instead relies on the square-loop saturation characteristics of the magnetic core to absorb input voltage variations.
The ferroresonant action functions primarily as a flux limiter rather than a conventional voltage regulator. However, with a fixed supply frequency, it is capable of maintaining an almost constant output voltage over a wide range of input voltage fluctuations.
As a result, all problems related to voltage variation and fluctuation are effectively controlled, and the CVT delivers a stable output voltage with regulation of ±1%.
