Voltage Variations / Fluctuations and Principle of Operation

The key phenomenon that makes a CVT unique is ferroresonance. This is achieved by resonating the output secondary winding with carefully selected, high-stability capacitors. The resonant circuit is precisely designed so that the secondary portion of the transformer core operates independently during each half cycle.

As a result, the output voltage remains nearly constant even when there are wide variations in the input voltage. By design, Purevolt’s CVT delivers a pure sinusoidal output waveform. Owing to this operating principle, all issues related to voltage variations and fluctuations are effectively managed, ensuring a stable output voltage within ±1% accuracy.

Transients / Noise (Spikes)

In Purevolt’s ferroresonant Constant Voltage Transformer (CVT), the primary and secondary windings are separated by a large air gap and a magnetic shunt. This design significantly reduces the combined inductance and capacitance, providing effective protection against asymmetric voltage transients.

There is also a controlled phase difference between the input and output voltages in the Purevolt CVT. This phase shift varies with load magnitude and changes in line voltage, which further helps in suppressing electrical noise.

The physical and electrical isolation between the primary and secondary windings effectively strips away the high-frequency components of normal-mode noise. Additionally, the neutral-to-ground bonding on the secondary side creates a short-circuit path for common-mode noise, ensuring superior noise attenuation.

Short Interruptions & Voltage Dips

The output of the CVT is derived from the saturated secondary section of the transformer, which maintains an inherent energy reserve of approximately 5–10 milliseconds at full load. This stored energy enables the CVT to bridge short-duration power interruptions and deep voltage dips.

During brief power breaks—commonly caused by phase compensation, or the switching ON/OFF of heavy electrical equipment—the Purevolt CVT continues to supply power from its internal energy reserve, ensuring uninterrupted and stable output to connected equipment.
